5 of the Best Padel Staycations

The cold weather has got us looking forward to longer evenings and weekends away in the summer. Why not combine a long weekend away with a game of padel!

If you are looking for a mini-break to impress someone special, or a long weekend with friends, we’ve rounded up the best options below.

East Cotswolds

STAY: Bull, Burford

Bull was one of the hottest openings of 2023. A converted coaching inn in the middle of a quintessential Cotswold village is the opposite of your traditional country hotel. The rooms are earthy and moody, all with 24/7 access to a large pantry of treats (maybe sneak some away for a post-game snack).

You will be spoilt for choice with the dining options. Choose from Wild, a stunning restaurant with food cooked over an open grill in the middle of a communal dining table or Horn, a slightly more casual affair again with a focus on communal dining. For special nights, book Hiro, the 10 seater Omakase restaurant.

PLAY: Bull, Burford

1 outdoor court. Surcharge for hotel guests.

The best part of Bull, is that they have a padel court that guests can use. Ask reception for a map and follow the winding road through the village to the outdoor court.

East Sussex

STAY: Tillingham Wines, Tillingham

A vineyard with restaurant, bar, pizza barn & rooms - is there anything else you need from a weekend break? In the heart of East Sussex, this stylish vineyard host daily tours which if you are not careful, can turn into a whole afternoon tasting at the onsite wine bar.

We recommend booking dinner in the main restaurant one evening to taste their menu of local produce including fish caught daily at Rye Harbour. During the summer, eat pizza in the barn on your second night for a more casual evening, perfect for soaking up the wine!

Dew Farm, Dew Lane, Peasmarsh, East Sussex, TN31 6XD

PLAY: Rye Padel Club

2 outdoor courts. Contact club to book intro session.

When you are ready to sweat out the wine, non-members can book an introductory or coaching session at Rye Padel Club - a 10 minute drive away. Stop off in Rye on the way back for lunch at Whitehouse and to explore the well-curated independent shops.

Norfolk

STAY: The Gunton Arms, Nr. Cromer

The Gunton Arms is so much more than a pub with rooms. Set in a large, historic country park, the historic building has artworks on display by Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Lucian Freud.

Local venison and beef are cooked over a large open fire in the main dining room, the Elk Room. The bedrooms, a mixture of vintage furniture and perfectly mismatched prints, are great value to use as a base to explore both the Norfolk coast and countryside.

PLAY: Salle Moor Hall Farm

3 indoor courts OPENING SPRING 2024.

Salle Moor Hall Farm is a working estate, 30 minutes from The Gunton Arms, but well worth the drive. The farm hosts local producers including a coffee roaster and microbrewery, along with other independent stores.

They are developing 3 padel courts in a converted cattle shed, in collaboration with Native2Norfolk. The courts are due to open in the Spring, perfect timing for a summer break!

Scotland

STAY: Marine Troon, Ayrshire

Looking for a more active break? Just 40 minutes drive Glasgow is The Marine Troon. A golf resort hotel overlooking the stunning Ayr coastline. There are a multitude of golf courses nearby, including the Royal Troon Golf Club, host to The Open from 17-21 July 2024. No judgment if you are not quite at the level of Scottie Scheffler, there are plenty of other options for all abilities and the hotel concierge can arrange tee times.

The onsite spa was named one of the “Best Spas in Scotland for 2023 and 2024” by Condé Nast Traveller. With two restaurants onsite, and lots more enticing options in nearby Troon, you will be well catered for a long weekend.

PLAY: West of Scotland Padel Club

3 indoor courts. £30 per hour.

If you can tear yourself away from the golf and spa, the West of Scotland Padel Club is a short 20 minute drive north. The courts are thankfully indoors, a blessing with the rugged Scottish weather. Non-members can book online but must message the club on the day of play for access.

Cotswolds

STAY: Cowley Manor, Cowley

Recently taken over by the Experimental Hotel Group, bringing their distinctive flair from hotels in Menorca and Paris to the Cotswolds. The hotel interiors are impressive and the bedrooms opulent, with four poster beds and colourful bathrooms.

Our favourite place is the bar where a DJ plays at the weekend, transporting you to an Ibiza beach club from the comfort of velvet sofas. In the summer relax on the terrace overlooking the lake with a cocktail, or on the sun loungers at the spa.

PLAY: Padel Shift, Elkstone

2 outdoor courts. £36 per hour.

Padel Shift has two courts at Elkstone Studios, a tasteful development of an historic cattle farm, set in the heart of the Cotswold countryside. Purchase balls and rent rackets from the onsite vending machine. Leave enough time to visit Knead after your game for coffee, brunch and handmade cakes.
